Bruno Spengler claims thrilling Oschersleben pole

BMW’s Bruno Spengler has taken his second successive Oschersleben pole position in a thrilling wet/dry qualifying session ahead of Audi’s Jamie Green.

Spengler’s BMW stable-mate, Augusto Farfus, was third and drivers’ championship leader, Mike Rockenfeller, ended the afternoon fourth.

Spengler set his fastest time of 1m20.140 to take pole by 0.123 seconds ahead of Green, who took the best result of his Audi career since switching from Mercedes at the end of 2012.

The Briton would have claimed the top-spot, had he not ran wide in his RS 5 DTM in the middle of his hot-lap.

Dirk Werner finished fifth as the second quickest of the BMWs ahead of Filipe Albuquerque, who rounded out the top-six.

Gary Paffett ended qualifying as the best of the Mercedes drivers with seventh place on the anniversary of his 100th DTM start.

However, like stable-mate Dani Juncadella, he was given a five-place grid drop for using the wrong tyres in the free practice before qualifying, and will see him start 12th as a result.

This promotes Miguel Molina, Martin Tomczyk and Timo Scheider up a position, and puts Adrien Tambay into the top-10.

Christian Vietoris was the surprise of the session after he was unable to manage better than 21st and dropped out in Q1. However, he will be promoted to 20th due to Juncadella’s penalty.

Edoardo Mortara’s difficult season continued after he qualified 17th as the lowest placed of the Audi drivers.

Incidents in the session included Robert Wickens, Adrien Tambay and Timo Glock, after all three drivers went into the gravel in various places on the track.

Despite the offs, all three drivers’ cars were undamaged.
