First joint DTM and Super GT event planned for 2015

The Joint Steering Committee of DTM, Super GT and IMSA representatives has announced it is considering holding its first joint DTM/Super GT event as as early as 2015; two years earlier than originally announced.

The committee, along with the Technical Working Group, was originally formed by representatives from the DTM and the Japanese Super GT series in Autumn 2012.

The committee was formed with the objective of using similar style cars and common technical regulations in DTM events, Super GT races, and as of March 2013, North American races when US-based IMSA joined.

Amongst others, IMSA is also in charge of the new-for-2014, Tudor UnitedSportsCar Championship.

On the weekend of the inaugural round of the TUSCC at Daytona on January 25-26, the DTM’s governing body, the ITR, issued a press release announcing the committee is considering its first joint DTM/Super GT event as early as 2015; two years earlier than the originally announced 2017.

“The committee is considering holding a first joint event of DTM and Super GT in 2015 in Japan or China,” read the release.

The head of the ITR, Hans-Werner Aufrecht added: “Witnessing the intense cooperation of series organizers, associations and car manufacturers from three different continents and cultures on a joint project feels just great.

“With the planned first joint on-track appearances, the first results of this constructive collaboration also will become palpable for the fans.”

The release also confirmed that a stand alone event could happen in the United States by 2016 as a result of the tie-up with IMSA.

A US-based touring car series using the regulations – likely to be branded DTM America – could then follow in 2017.
