Marco Wittmann takes dominant Hungaroring win

The DTM’s return to the Hungaroring saw BMW driver Marco Wittmann take a dominant victory by over six-seconds ahead of Audi’s Miguel Molina, and 2012 DTM champion Bruno Spengler.

Wittmann, who started on the option tyre, made an excellent start and led every lap of the 41 lap race to take the second DTM victory of his career, and the second of the 2014 DTM season.

Third place starter Miguel Molina wound up second ahead of 2012 DTM champion Bruno Spengler.

Spengler started ninth on the standard rubber in his BMW M4 DTM, and dropped down the field prior to switching to the option Hankook tyre. However, the extra  pace in the softer tyre allowed Spengler to move through the field to take his first DTM podium of the year.

Audi’s Edoardo Mortara wound up fourth, but the Italian endured a tough race in his Abt run Audi, following contact with Timo Glock at several points in the race.

Glock ran as high as second in the early stages of the race, but following contact with Mortara and in the closing laps, Audi DTM rookie Nico Müller, the BMW driver got a puncture and was eventually classified 19th.

Mortara’s Abt Audi team-mate Adrien Tambay was fifth, ahead of BMW DTM rookie Maxime Martin who rounded out the top-six.

Jamie Green was seventh ahead of Antonio Felix da Costa, while double DTM champion Mattias Ekström was ninth, one position ahead of last year’s DTM title winner Mike Rockenfeller.

Mercedes once again struggled and Robert Wickens was the Stuttgart-based manufacturer’s best placed driver in 11th.

Wickens’ team-mate, Gary Paffett, was taken out on the first lap of the race following contact with BMW’s Joey Hand.
