Robert Wickens takes second DTM career pole at Norisring

Robert Wickens kept Mercedes at the top of the time sheets after taking the first pole position of the year for the Mercedes DTM squad at the Norisring.

The Canadian has shown strong pace all weekend, as has the Mercedes DTM squad. In this morning’s first free practice session, Dani Juncadella was fastest, while in the second, Wickens went quickest.

Wickens then carried the momentum into qualifying to produce a stunning lap time of 47.883s.

DTM returnee Paul di Resta was second, while Jamie Green – who has scored four victories in his DTM career around the streets of Nuremberg – will line up third in his Audi RS 5 DTM.

Pascal Wehrlein qualified fourth, one place ahead of HWA Mercedes team-mate and 2005 DTM champion Gary Paffett, while Christian Vietoris will line up sixth, meaning there are five Mercedes in the top 6.

Double DTM title winner, Mattias Ekström, was the best placed Audi in seventh, while Marco Wittmann was the sole representative for BMW in eighth.

Rounding out the top 10 were the Audi pairing of Adrien Tambay and Nico Müller.

The tough morning practice sessions experienced by the BMW DTM outfits at the Norisring continued into qualifying, with both Antonio Felix da Costa and Martin Tomczyk failing to make it out of Q1.

Vitaly Petrov also continued the difficult start to his DTM career after he qualified his Mercedes C Coupe last.
