Paul di Resta tops dry-to-wet second practice at the Nürburgring

Mercedes’ Paul di Resta was fastest in the second free practice session, which was also rain affected just as the first session, only this time starting dry, but with rain falling just after 20 minutes of the start, this meant there was little improvement to times during the last half of the session.

Audi’s Timo Scheider led the way for much of the early running, having set a time of 1:23.587 in his Phoenix-run RS 5, but just as the rain was beginning to fall, di Resta went fastest by just nine-thousandths of a second, and after that his time was never threatened on the now wet Nürburgring circuit.

Championship leader Marco Wittmann was the fastest of the BMW drivers in third, just 0.016 seconds behind di Resta, and was closely followed by the BMW Team MTEK pair of António Félix da Costa and Timo Glock.

Adrien Tambay was sixth fastest in his Abt Audi RS 5, meaning the top six were all covered by just a tenth of a second.

A second covered the top 20 drivers, with only Mücke Mercedes driver Vitaly Petrov, and BMW Team RBM’s Joey Hand outside of a second, in 21st and 22nd positions.

Audi Team Rosberg’s Nico Müller, Mücke Mercedes’ Daniel Juncadella, BMW Team Schnitzer’s Bruno Spengler and Audi Sport Abt’s Mattias Ekström rounded out the top ten

Qualifying takes place at 13:45 CET.
