Tom Blomqvist dominates first free practice at Lausitzring

BMW Motorsport has set the pace in the first free practice session celebrated today, kicking off the second round of the 2015 DTM season at Lausitzring.

Grey and coudy skies welcomed the DTM field today, with the track staying dry for the first free practice session. Tom Blomqvist, BMW’s new arrival, who led the field in his M4 DTM, setting a best time of 1:18.145. The Briton was 0.197 seconds faster than Audi’s Mattias Ekström, winner of the second race in Hockenheim in his RS 5 DTM.

Marco Wittmann was on top form today, finishing in third position for BMW. The reigning champion was 0.210 seconds off his team mate’s best time, and was followed by Audi’s contingent formed by Jamie Green, Mike Rockenfeller, points’ leader Edoardo Mortara and Timo Scheider. The Ingolstadt manufacturer showed itself strong again, with 6 cars in the top ten.

Maxime Martin, Wittmann’s team mate at BMW Team RMG was eighth, albeit 0.456 seconds off Blomqvist’s time.

Robert Wickens was the top man for Mercedes in the C63 DTM run by HWA AG, nearly six tenths off the pace. Audi’s Miguel Molina closed the top ten, 0.604 seconds away from Blomqvist.

Competition was close again, with the entire 24-car field separated by less than 1.3 seconds.

The DTM resumes on track action tomorrow at 12:25 CEST (GMT + 2), with the second free practice session.
