Miguel Molina takes pole position for Race 1 at the Lausitzring

Audi Sport has continued to dominate the second round of the Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters, taking place at the Lausitzring. Team Abt Sportsline’s Miguel Molina took pole position for Race 1, as the Ingolstadt manufacturer monopolised the first two rows of the grid.

The 20-minute session started with lots of on track action, to decide the starting grid for the first race of the weekend. Times fell quickly as Jamie Green established himself as fastest overall after the first stint, battling with fellow Audi Sport driver Mattias Ekström. Miguel Molina went up to third, with Marco Wittmann not being able to break the Audi trio.

With only four sets of tyres for both races and qualifying sessions, drivers came in after the first 10 minutes, leaving an empty track.

First one to head out again was Mercedes’ Pascal Wehrlein, winner at the Lausitzring last year, taking advantage of an empty track to improve his personal best and go up to third place.

One by one, all drivers went out on track for their final runs. Audi’s Timo Scheider improved to 11th place. Miguel Molina clocked a sensational lap to set the fastest time of the day with a 1:17.438, to take first position.

BMW drivers Marco Wittmann and Maxime Martin went off track in the closing stages of the session. The reigning champion rejoined the track just in front of Jamie Green as the Briton was on a flyer, and will be investigated by the Stewards.

Edoardo Mortara was also on a fast lap, setting purple sectors, but had to lift off due to the yellow flags, being third on the line.

BMW Team RBM’s Augusto Farfus has also been reported to the Stewards for alleged blocking, although it’s not clear whether the incident happened on track or on the pit lane.

The first race of the weekend is scheduled for 18:08 CEST (GMT + 2) and will be the first twilight race of the year, where dropping track temperatures will become a new issue to be considered in the new racing format for the 2015 DTM season.
