Edoardo Mortara fastest in aborted warm up session

The weather at the Red Bull Ring is the main talking point this morning, as yesterday’s sun and warmth have turned into heavy rain, fog and compromised visibility. Only 14 drivers took part in the morning warm up, which was stopped by the race director after only 10 minutes.

It had rained at Spielberg during the night, and the rainfall had been intensifying during the morning. A five-car crash during the supporting Audi TT Cup race forced the recovery vehicles on track, and the DTM drivers and teams headed to the 15-minute warm up session tentatively.

At the green lights, António Félix Da Costa was the first man on track, and most drivers used the session to practice pit stops, with today’s race featuring a compulsory tyre change during the second 20-minute period.

Only two drivers completed a lap under the rainy conditions. Audi’s Edoardo Mortara set the fastest time of 1:57.597. BMW’s Bruno Spengler also completed a whole lap, setting a time 7.964 seconds slower than yesterday’s winner.

12 more drivers ventured on track, although none from the Mercedes AMG squad, but no whole laps were completed, with the classification being established by the times in the first and second sectors.

Qualifying for Race 2 is scheduled for 12:40, with the race starting at 15:18. All times are CEST (GMT+2).
