Mattias Ekström given three place grid penalty for Sunday

Audi’s Mattias Ekström has been handed a three-place grid penalty for the second DTM race at Norisring after the race stewards deemed him to be at fault for the clash which eliminated the leading Mercedes pair in race one.

Ekström tried to pass Team HWA’s Robert Wickens on lap 20 of the race, but only succeeded in collecting fellow Mercedes driver and race leader Christian Vietoris.

The Swede will drop three places from wherever he qualifies on the grid for tomorrow’s longer second race.

The official statement read: “Due to his manoeuvre in the race on Saturday, Mattias Ekström incurred a penalty from the stewards of the meeting. The Swede will be dropped three places on the grid for the race on Sunday.”
