Edoardo Mortara remains focussed after “perfect day” in Hungaroring

Audi driver Edoardo Mortara made an important step forward in his bid for the title after winning today’s race at the Nürburgring, significantly reducing the gap to BMW’s Marco Wittmann.

Audi were able to take advantage of the favourable circuit layout to their lighter RS 5 DTM to get Edoardo Mortara and Jamie Green, their two championship contenders, out in front and guarded by the rest of the manufacturer’s drivers. All eight of Audis cars qualified in top eight positions of the grid, and went on to finish 1-2-3-4-5-6 in the race.

With Marco Wittmann only managing seventh position, Mortara was able to reduce the gap in the drivers’ championship to just 14 points after Race 1.

“We had a perfect day. We did a good qualifying session and got pole position and made a good start. I was a bit worried about the high grip level and its effect on tyre wear, but everything went smoothly,” said Mortara to TouringCarTimes.

“Tomorrow will be different, as we will have more weight in the car, so we won’t be able to replicate today’s result. But our approach will be the same, because we need to close the gap to Marco”, continued the Italian.

“The title will be decided in Hockenheim. If we can continue like this, we will be able to fight until the end without problems. But, for now, the important thing is to have a good performance tomorrow” concluded Mortara, who stayed away from the spotlight in order to focus for tomorrow’s preparations.
