Marco Wittmann: “We didn’t stand a chance against the Audis”

BMW Motorsport Marco Wittmann could only manage to be seventh in today’s race at the Hungaroring with his championship advantage significantly reduced by race winner Edoardo Mortara, but says he hopes to be able to keep ahead of the Italian in the points table at the end of Sunday.

The Team RMG driver started from tenth on the grid, and at the start he managed to gain several positions, critically avoiding the incident at Turn 2.

“My start was OK but, in Turn 1, I saw the gap and I went for it, because I knew I couldn’t do anything against the Audis,” said Wittmann to TouringCarTimes.

The Audis soon began to open up a gap to the chasing BMW driver, with Wittmann not being able to keep up with their pace. The 2014 champion finished seventh, and now has just a 14 point lead over Mortara.

“We didn’t stand a chance against the Audis, but the important thing is that we scored some valuable points to stay ahead. We will see how things go tomorrow,” he added.
