Edoardo Mortara on pole again in Hungary as BMW enter the mix

Edoardo Mortara has taken his second pole position of the weekend at the Hungaroring, but Audi didn’t have it all their way this time with BMW’s Marco Wittmann qualifying just behind Mortara and team-mate Mattias Ekström in third.

The Audi RS 5 DTMs were the favourites after dominating all weekend so far, but it was clear from early in the session that BMW Motorsport had done their homework and were in a better position to fight for the top positions.

Mercedes AMG’s Lucas Auer was the first to set a reference time, with Gary Paffett and Felix Rosenqvist next. The Austrian’s joy wouldn’t last long, with Audi’s Jamie Green going fastest by a margin of over seven-tenths of a second.

Marco Wittmann pit his BMW in second position on his last attempt, with Edoardo Mortara initially only fifth behind Maxime Martin and Tom Blomqvist, with the latter investigated for apparently blocking Mattias Ekström, with no further action taken.

The Italian from Team Abt Sportsline then set two more laps to try and improve his position, but mistakes in the second and third sectors prevented him from moving up in the classification.

All cars returned to the pits to prepare for their final runs, with the entire field back in action with just four minutes to go.

BMW’s Marco Wittmann made the most of his last set of tyres to take provisional pole with a time of 1:35.139, but this was quickly beaten by Audi’s Mattias Ekström by just one thousandth of a second.

It would be Edoardo Mortara who left it to his final attempt to clock the fastest lap with a time of 1:34.984, also establishing a new track record.

Robert Wickens was the only Mercedes driver to make it into the top ten, qualifying in eighth, four-tenths of a second behind Mortara.

The start of Race 2 is scheduled for 15:13 CET.
