Mattias Ekström surprised to win “boring” race

Mattias Ekström achieved his first victory of the season, and the 22nd of his DTM career in today’s race at the Hungaroring, which will also be the last race for the Swede in the series this year.

The Audi Team Abt driver managed to get ahead of the championship contenders at the start and to led until the chequered flag.

“To be honest, the race was very boring for me” Ekström said to TouringCarTimes. “I mean, it’s always good to win, but today I didn’t even sweat!

“The start for me was very uneventful, because all the trouble happened behind. After that, I went down to the first corner and let Edo [Mortara] through, but was a bit confused when, at Turn 4, he let me pass. I then realised that he had some problems, so I focussed in doing my own race and bringing the car home” added Ekström.

The Hungaroring was the Swede’s last participation in the DTM this year, as he will miss the Hockenheim finale in order to defend his lead in the World Rallycross Championship. The Audi driver said: “It was very good to end the season like this, I’m very happy to have this result.”

Today’s result promoted Mattias Ekström to fifth place in the championship on 107 points.
