Fredrik Ekblom eyes more STCC outings in 2017

After picking up his first Scandinavian Touring Car Championship victory since September 2015 in the final race at Knutstorp, Kristoffersson Motorsport’s Fredrik Ekblom says he is open to more outings in the series this year.

Filling in for the team’s regular driver Johan Kristoffersson while the latter is on World Rallycross duties at Hockenheim, Ekblom was fastest in both practice sessions before taking pole for races one and three at the Skåne circuit.

Ekblom, who last year raced with Volvo in the World Touring Car Championship, was left without a drive for 2017 and only found out in February, leaving his options scarce.

“It was very late when I found out that I was not going to be driving in the WTCC. I don’t want to talk about specifics but it messed up my season.

“We will see what everyone’s schedule is like, and I may do some more filling in throughout the season, but that is not confirmed yet,” Ekblom explained.

What was confirmed over the course of the season was the pace of both Ekblom and the Volkswagen Dealer Team, something that delighted the 2007 STCC champion.

He said: “it’s been a really nice weekend, with my old friends from KMS and Volkswagen. I’m really happy that I could give them a victory because I know they like victories!”

“I don’t have a drive at the moment, so I’m open for anything that happens later in the year,” Ekblom said.
