Jamie Green closes on the championship lead after dominant win

Audi Sport driver Jamie Green confirmed his strong form by scoring a dominant victory at Lausitzring today, the second of 2017 for the Briton who is already a clear championship contender.

Green qualified in third position on the grid, just 0.027 seconds from the pole. The Team Rosberg driver overtook BMW’s Tom Blomqvist on the fourth lap of the race, changing tyres on lap 16. The Briton lost ground to Mercedes’ Robert Wickens, who was leading the race, for a few laps, coming back strongly with just 15 minutes to go. Green made a move on lap 31 to take the lead, quickly opening a gap to take his second victory in just four races.

“It felt like a long race. I was following Robert Wickens in position two most of the time and waited for the perfect time to attack. In the first stint, Robert was very strong, but after the pit stop I was able to attack. The battle with him was fair and in the end I managed to gain an advantage,” Green said.

The Briton is now second in the standings, 16 points behind Mercedes’ Lucas Auer. “I’m very happy about my second victory in just four races this season. Plus, it’s great that two Audi drivers were on podium today,” added Green.

Audi Sport played an aggressive strategy with both Mattias Ekström and Mike Rockenfeller pitting at the end of the first lap. They would finish second and fifth in the race, managing to keep a strong pace until the end. Audi is now second in the manufacturers’ standings, 10 points behind Mercedes AMG.

Head of Audi Sport Dieter Gass was pleased with the work done today by his team, as there were five RS 5 DTMs in the points: “That was truly fantastic for us today. We successfully fought a forward battle with nearly all our drivers. Obviously, Jamie’s victory is particularly sweet, but the aggressive strategies of Mattias and Mike with their stops on lap one were top-class too. They set fast times up until the end and Mike even posted his fastest lap on the penultimate one. This speaks for our new Audi RS 5 DTM. We had five Audi cars in the top seven today.”
