Ekström wins at Nürburgring

Mattias Ekström has regained the lead in the championship standings after winning the seventh race of the season on the Nürburgring. Ekström finished a few seconds ahead of his teammate Kristensen.

Gary Paffett gave his leading position away at his second pitstop by driving over the white line at the exit, for which he was penalized.

Paffett had to take a drive through-penalty, dropping him back to fourth place. Two laps befor the finish his teammate Mika Häkkinen, lying in third, let Paffett pass giving him the final podium place. Earlier on Häkkinen had given a second place to Kristensen when he braked to late when trying to overtake Ekström. He had to take a big detour before continuing his race.

The race started with a roling start because of the rain. All drivers started on wet tires but had to change for slicks after ten laps. In the early stages of the race Opel driver Laurent Aiello was driving an impressive pace, putting presure on Bernd Schneider. However, as the track dried up, the Opels dropped back and at the finish there was no Opel car in the points for the third time this season.
