DTM to Oschersleben
This weekend the DTM series moves on to Oschersleben. Bernd Schneider is in the lead of the championship after two convincing victories . Mattias Ekström on the other hand is at the other end of the scale. Two DNF’s and zero points. How does the drivers feel about the coming race?
Bernd Schneider:
– I had a lot of fun in the season so far. We started the season with a truly good package and have got what it needs to win races. Therefore, I have to say that I’m really happy.
How do you assess you chances of securing the third consecutive win in the 2006 season?
– In normal circumstances, I’d say my chances are great. But I will have to contest the weekend with 10 kilos placement weight aboard my car for each of my wins secured in the first two races, thus being 20 kilos heavier than the 2006-spec Audis. Now, all the Audis and the 2005-spec Mercedes-Benz cars are lighter.
Does Oschersleben rather suit the AMG-Mercedes C-Class or not?
– In the past, the racing at Oschersleben used to be extremely close. Last year’s race was won by Gary Paffett in his Mercedes-Benz, while Audi’s Tom Kristensen secured his maiden DTM win here, in 2004. I’m of the opinion that neither Audi nor Mercedes Benz will enjoy a clear advantage.
Who are your toughest rivals, currently?
– I expect Tom Kristensen to do well, particularly as he knows how to win, at Oschersleben. At the same time, Martin Tomczyk also proved to be extremely competitive, at the EuroSpeedway. And Mattias Ekström is always quick, no matter where we’re racing.
Mattias Ekström
What is your strategy for the rest of the season?
– Previously I’ve driven a bit defensively to always finish and take points. Now I will give everything, because I have nothing to loose. If there is a tiny gap, I will take it. If anyone tries to block me, they should be worried. Second places are uninterestning.
What are your thoughts for this coming race at Oschersleben?
– I was present at the STCC-premiere where Audi took first and second places. I hope the positive trend continues with me this weekend.
What is your strategy and ambition for this race?
– I am going to drive flat out and my ambition is to pass the finish line this time. It’s ok with a podium finish, but the view is best from the top of the podium.
Does the car have enough fuel this time?
– The car is filled up and the team is trimmed, Ekström said with a smile.
