New version of Dunlop tyres for DTM

Dunlop once again has improved the performance of the DTM tyres for the 2007 DTM season. Thanks to its optimised running surface, the exclusive DTM spec of the Dunlop SP Sport Maxx provides the 500bhp DTM racers with even more consistent grip than in the past. Hence, the drivers can push even harder as the new, wear-optimised tyre uncomplainingly copes with higher strains.

During the first tests, held at Estoril, Portugal, Almeria, Spain and Vallelunga, Italy, the Audi and AMG-Mercedes teams already had the opportunity to test the modified tyre – with thoroughly positive results. Audi ace Tom Kristensen, for instance, says: “The new 2007-Dunlop’s provide better balance and grip over the distance than the 2006 DTM tyres. I experienced similar grip and balance over one lap but better endurance ability over a race distance.”

The Dane praised the work of the Dunlop design engineers: “The main reason for this improvement is the work done by the engineer’s regarding the tread compounds, to get the tyre temperatures even better controlled than it was the case in the past.” His fellow Audi driver, Martin Tomczyk, adds: “The new Dunlop tyre for the 2007 season suits us well. The reduced tyre wear represents a general advantage and furthermore, the new tyre delivers on a particular constant level when used in long-runs.”

In the Mercedes camp, the next development step of the DTM tyres also is appreciated. Reigning DTM Champion Bernd Schneider, the arguably most experienced DTM driver when it comes to tyre design, says: “In the past we always could rely on Dunlop. And with the new tyre, Dunlop demonstrates once again that the development never stops, in DTM.”

While working on the 2007-spec, the engineers had to cope with the challenge of optimising the tyre but avoiding the necessity of additional tyre tests at the same time, as the cost-reduction orientated regulations ban extensive new designs on the DTM cars. “As we didn’t touch the dimensions and the design of the tyres but opted for just a new compound with higher thermal and mechanical stability, the DTM teams can adapt to the new tyre during their normal set-up work,” explains Dieter Seibert, the man who is responsible for Dunlop’s DTM involvement.
