In the Eifel region, Mercedes leads 7:6
Prior to the eighth round of the 2007 DTM season, held at the Nürburgring from 31st August to 2nd September, quite a bunch of drivers may still hope for stealing Mattias Ekström (Audi A4 DTM) his current DTM Championship lead. Following the Audi one-two-three-four at Zandvoort, DTM now travels to the Nürburgring.
A circuit where Audi and Mercedes proved to deliver on one level, since the DTM revival back in 2000. Six races were won by Audi drivers, seven wins were secured by Mercedes-Benz.
Quite obviously, Bruno Spengler would love to repeat his 2006 triumph. Particularly as the Canadian and his fellow Mercedes-Benz driver, Bernd Schneider, hold third and fourth championship positions, thus representing the top flight of the drivers racing the cars with stars. They are determined to massively close in on the championship leaders – Ekström (38 points) and Zandvoort winner Martin Tomczyk (30) – in the Nürburgring round. Furthermore, Spengler (26 points) and Schneider 25.5) are split by just 0.5 points, hence, a close brand-internal battle will ad to the excitement.
Therefore, Audi spearhead Ekström is convinced: “I’m still far from having secured the title. The race at the Nürburgring will be an important cornerstone as Martin and Bruno are just a few points behind. Everything can happen, despite the eight-point lead I’m holding following the race at Zandvoort.” Bruno Spengler confirms that this kind of lead is nothing you should try to rest on. “I’ll give my absolutely very best at the Nürburgring and I think that I still have got good chances of finishing the 2007 DTM season as champion.”
