Only two races left of DTM 2007

Final spurt in DTM. Just two more rounds to go, then you will know the successor of reigning champion Bernd Schneider. Or will the record holder – five DTM titles – be able to up the ante and pass his opponents, on the home straight?

A rather unlikely scenario as current championship leader Ekström (44 points) holds a 16.5-lead over Schneider, prior to the ninth DTM round, held at Barcelona. With 20 more points to be scored, in the final two rounds, Schneider has to secure a win and finish runner-up in the other round, at least, to pass Ekström. While the Swede mustn’t score more than just a point, in the races at Barcelona and Hockenheim.

Not impossible but rather unlikely. In seven of the eight rounds contested to date, the Swede succeeded in securing a point-finish. Furthermore, Martin Tomczyk (40 points) and Schneider’s fellow Mercedes-Benz driver, Bruno Spengler (34) also are in more promising positions than Schneider when it comes to clinching the 2007 DTM title.

On the other hand it is a fact that Ekström is the only driver who has got the chance of securing the title early, at the Circuit de Catalunya. To do so, the Swede must score seven points more than Tomczyk and one more than Spengler. Should the Swede win the race, Tomczyk mustn’t finish better than sixth, should the Swede come second, he will be champion if Tomczyk finishes eighth or worse. In the case of Ekström finishing third, the battle for the title will be taken down to the season finale, at Hockenheim. And same would be the case should Spengler score more points than Ekström.
