Spengler second for the second time
For the second year in succession Canadian Bruno Spengler finished second in the DTM. Last year he finished seven points behind Bernd Schneider and this year only two points behind Mattias Ekström.
“Sure I am disappointed, but I am happy because I finished the year as the top Mercedes driver. What made the championship hard were the first two races without points because it is difficult to recover from that,” said Spengler to Globe Auto.
For the season final at Hockenhem Spengler had a good chance for the title. But to be able to take it he had to finish in front of Ekström. But Spengler felt that he fell victim of Audi’s tactics of holding their slower drivers out on track.
“I got stuck behind the Audi guys who were there to block me and I lost a lot of time because of it. I had to take a lot of chances to get past them. Mercedes played a fair game all year and Audi played more of a team strategy to ensure their driver won the championship. That’s not the philosophy of Mercedes,” said Spengler.
The Mercedes-driver was involved in more of the DTM 2007 controversies as he got disqualified for an last lap incident with Timo Scheider.
“I got disqualified for no reason in my opinion and I would have been three points ahead at the years end. The car was great from the first race and our performance all year was very good — the six points we missed at the first race was the only shame,” Spengler said.
But still the Canadian is hungry for more DTM. It is not completely settled yet that he will continue in the DTM 2008, but it looks most likely.
“I am not sure what will happen next year but I will be with Mercedes. It’s looking like it will be DTM.”
