Tomczyk pleads for more manufacturers
Our last poll at TouringCarTimes already showed a clear result. 92% of our readers said that the DTM needs more manufacturers. Hermann Tomczyk, father of DTM driver Martin Tomczyk, agrees with this.
Tomczyk is one of the most important persons in German motorsport. He’s not only the vice president of the FIA, behind Max Mosley, but he’s also the president of the German Motorsport Association, the DMSB. The DMSB is in charge of handling the DTM technical regulations.
Recently Tomczyk commented on discussion about the new DTM rules for 2009. In an interview with the German press agency ADP Tomczyk said that new regulations is not the only thing DTM needs to survive. “If the DTM doesn’t want to die a second time there must be a third manufacturer in 2009”, he said.
According to Tomczyk the DTM has “one of the best marketing potentials. Therefor every manufacturer should consider an entry in DTM.”
The DTM was founded in 1984 and became very succesfull in the nineties. After turning into ITC in 1995, the championship already died in 1996. Main cause being the exploding costs. In 2000 the new DTM restarted with three manufacturers. However, in 2005 Opel left DTM, which was the start of the problems in DTM.
