Albers back in DTM after thinking of quiting?
It was the second time Christijan Albers tested a DTM car this year. As before the Dutchman took place behind the wheel of a Futurecom-TME run Audi A4 DTM. Albers was invited by to the team to test again, but it’s still not certain he will race for them as well this year.
Eventhough it would make sence Albers would return to the DTM series, he is still carefull with his hopes. “I won’t turn down the opportunity to race in the DTM. It’s a great championship to race in, but first I need to make final decision on what I want to do this season my self. And I need to do that on short notice”, Albers said.
“Returning to the DTM is not only my decision”, he continues. “The DTM can be a chance for me to make a new start. To be honest, after this disastrous season in Formula 1 I have been thinking of quiting racing.”
Albers has been succesfull in DTM before, fighting for the championship several years. A change to Formula 1 didn’t bring the results he had hoped for though. “I have been giving everything for the past 14 years and I have achieved some things as well. But I lost some of the fun of racing in Formula 1. The people in the team were great, but the car didn’t suite my driving style, plus I had quite a lot of bad luck.”
If Albers would return to DTM, he won’t be able to bring money to the team. “I don’t have any sponsors for that at the moment. And new sponsors are very hard to find for a 2006 car. The decision for the seat is in the hands of Colin Kolles. For me it’s now most important to be here, have fun and meet the people from my last period in DTM. We’ll have to wait and see what happens after that.”
If Albers would race for Futurecom-TME he would become the teammate of Katherine Legge. Eventhough she will have a 2007 Audi A4, Albers would get a 2006 Audi A4. He won’t be getting the status of works driver, like Legge does.
