Ekström takes pole in dominating fashion
Just like last year, Audi dominated qualifying at Zandvoort, the Netherlands. The top three positions were ocupied by Audi drivers. Mattias Ekström took pole position for tomorrow’s race in dominating fashion. His teammate and championship leader Timo Scheider took second place. Tom Kristensen rounded up the top three.
Mercedes was closer to Audi than they had been all weekend. Thanks to some good laps from Jamie Green and Bruno Spengler the squad from Stuttgart managed to keep in touch. The Mercedes drivers finished fourth and fifth respectively.
Mattias Ekström was the first DTM driver ever to go under the 1:32.000 mark at Zandvoort during the first part of qualifying. Many drivers followed him in doing this during the second part of qualifying, but at the end of the third and final part of qualifying, Mattias Ekström only failed 0.012 of a second to beat the 1:31.000 mark.
Oliver Jarvis was the only driver in a one year old car to make it into the final part of qualifying. He will be starting from eight position tomorrow. Local hero Christijan Albers was the fastest driver in a two year old car. He made it into the second part of qualifying, but didn’t do a lap in this part to save tires. He will be starting from 14th tomorrow.
