Will Scheider or di Resta take the title?

Two races are left of the Deutsche Tourenwagen Meisters 2008. Timo Scheider leads with seven points ahead of his main rival Paul di Resta. It is Audi versus Mercedes. In theory Jamie Green and Mattias Ekström can also win, but their chances are small. The official DTM-site has put together the different outcomes of the title fight.

Timo Scheider will secure the 2008 DTM title early, at Le Mans, if…

…he scores a minimum of four points more than di Resta. Should Scheider win at Le Mans, di Resta mustn’t do better than coming third. Should Scheider clinch a runner-up finish, the Scot mustn’t secure a better result than sixth place. Should di Resta have to leave Le Mans empty-handed, finishing fifth would be enough for Scheider to win the title early.

Paul di Resta takes the battle for the title down to Hockenheim if…

…he finishes ahead of Scheider – as he did at Barcelona. In this case, the Scot will keep on closing in on the championship leader, thus increasing his chances of prevailing in the season finale. Di Resta even could take the championship lead at Le Mans – but to do so, he must score eight points more than Scheider. This would be the fact if di Resta would cross the finish line as race winner, with Scheider finishing seventh – or if die Resta would finish runner-up, with Scheider failing to score at all. While the two title contenders would be tied prior to the Hockenheim round should di Resta score seven points more than Scheider – what would be the case if di Resta wins and Scheider finishes sixth or if di Resta comes second and Scheider eighth.

…only theoretical chances for Green and Ekström:

Jamie Green lies 16 points behind Scheider, the current championship leader – and Mattias Ekström’s position is even worse: the Swede follows another two pints behind. Consequently, both drivers’ chances of securing the title are virtually over – but on the other hand, you never should say never. For Eki, two race wins would be necessary for scoring 20 points and defending his title – if Scheider fails to score more than just one point, in the final two rounds of the season. While a race win and a runner-up finish would be enough for Green – again with Scheider failing to score more than a single point. In both cases, they only would prevail if di Resta wouldn’t score more than a total of seven points, in the final two rounds of the season.

Meanwhile, Ekström’s chances are definitely over if Scheider scores three points more than the Swede and Green is out of the title race if Scheider adds five more points to his tally than the Briton, at Le Mans.
