Timo Scheider is the new DTM champion!

Audi-driver Timo Scheider is the new champion of the Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters, the DTM. The German won the last race at the Hockenheim, where is last remaining rival Paul di Resta finished in second.
“I cannot describe the feeling! There were so many things going around in my head in the last lap. To end the season with another win is just insane. I must thank all of my team members and Dr Wolfgang Ullrich who put me in this situation,” said Scheider.

It’s the first title for Timo Scheider in DTM, who finishes the season with a total of 75 points. Paul di Resta finished the season with a total of 71 points.

At the start it’s Timo Scheider who gets away best. Mattias Ekström, who started from pole position, manages to slot in behind in second ahead of Paul di Resta. But soon the word comes out that Ekström will get a 3 seconds penalty in the pits for not lining up on the grid correctly.

But before Ekström heads to the pits to serve his penalty, he is under attack from Paul di Resta and Jamie Green. They make contact, but are able to continue.

Four drivers didn’t survive the first lap. At the hairpin Mathias Lauda pushes Markus Winkelhock in the back of Christijan Albers. The Dutchman spins and is collected by Sussie Stoddart. All four drivers manage to return to the pits, but have to end their race there.

The rest of the race was very uneventfull. Timo Scheider was the first of the front runners to stop, but set a couple of quick laps after his stop to make sure he was not threatened by Paul di Resta when the Scotsman made his stop.

Di Resta never had the chance to get close to Scheider again, and the German drove steadily to his first ever DTM championship win. An emotional victory for Timo Scheider, as his DTM career seemed to have ended after the 2004 season, when Opel decided to stop racing in DTM.

The German however returned to DTM with Audi in 2006. With them he scored his first DTM race win this year at Oschersleben, and went on to take two more victories with them to secure the 2008 title. Audi Motorsport boss Ullrich was more than pleased.
“Schieder won the race on his own strength today! He is a well deserved champion. A big thanks to all team members,” said Ullrich.

Bernd Schneider crossed the line for the final time ever in sixth position. The German ends an amazing career and was happy after the race.
“First of all a big congrats to Schieder! I had a good start of the race, but the mid stint was not so good. But now it is over and I want to thank all my fans,” said Schneider.
