Ekström breaks lap record in Sweden
Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters star Mattias Ekström was present during the Swedish Touring Car Championship race in Gothenburg. The Swede broke the lap record with his Audi A4.
“The lap time I managed was 44.9 and this is the so far quickest lap of the track,” said Ekström.
“I had some laps of training and in the end I got a new set of tires and the Swedish ice hockey star Henrik Lundqwist in the passenger seat,” said Ekström.
The previously lap record was 46.0, set by Martin Öhlin, cometing in Carrera Cup Scandinavia. The fastest lap during the STCC race was 47.3, set by Robert Dahlgren.
Ekström moved to DTM in 2001 after being a front runner of the STCC for many years, including one title in 1999 for Audi.
“Since the STCC final 2007 this was the first time I visited the STCC,” said Ekström.
Ekström tried to beat the lap record of Mantorp Park during the STCC finale in 2007. That attempt failed however due to rain.
