Jamie Green: “It was hard to believe!”
Jamie Green won his first race of the year at Norisring after starting seventh on the grid.
“It was hard to believe that we had won in the year old car!” said Jamie Green on his website.
Green fought with the tricky conditions during qualifying and actually had pole position at first.
But the rules state that a driver only is allowed to complete eight timed laps in the final qualifying session.
Green had put the fastest lap of all, in his ninth attempt. That meant that he was moved down to seventh instead.
As the race started Green quickly started to gain places. As he left the pits after his second pitstop he was right along side Bruno Spengler.
“I came out of the pits side by side with Bruno Spengler into turn one but I was on the outside.
Timo Scheider was leading and Bruno was catching him, so I settled in behind Bruno and allowed him to focus on catching and overtaking Timo.”
The very exciting end of the race saw Green passing reigning champion Timo Scheider and stretching it out in the final corners to take the win.
“When exiting the last corner I was praying that there was only one lap to go – when I saw L1 on my pit board I knew that if i didnt make any mistakes the win would be mine…
When i crossed the finishing line I was very happy and relieved and all I could hear was my race engineer Martin shouting over the radio – it was hard to believe that we had won in the year old car!”
