David Coulthard to decide this week
David Coulthard is going to decide this week whether he is going to take part in the Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters this year for Mercedes.
“The best time to make a decision is when you’ve got the maximum amount of information at your disposal to decide whether to jump into it. That will be after this final test,” said Coulthard to Autosport.
Coulthard took part in the first official DTM test session of the year at Valencia yesterday where he showed strong form.
The Scot was second fastest, just six tenths from the fastest time of the day, set by Audi-man Alexandre Prémat.
“At every test I’ve learnt something new. I’ll make my decision after testing on wednesday as to whether it’s realistic for me to go racing in the DTM this year,” said Coulthard.
Coulthard has not raced anything since he retired from Formula One after the 2008 season. The Scot is commentating F1 for BBC this season, but it is reported that he is going to be able to continue with that even if he decides to go for DTM.
While Coulthard has got a lot of F1 experience, he is expecting a big challenge to adapt to the DTM cars.
“I have a genuine desire to explore whether I can adapt to this type of car, because it’s taking me out of my comfort zone. I’m a single-seater guy, and I realise this is a big challenge,” said Coulthard.
