BMW expects six cars for 2012

BMW expects to have six cars on the grid for the Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters in 2012 when the new rules come in to force.
“Currently we expect to field six cars. If this is the case, there will be an open cockpit for an external driver,” said BMW Motorsport boss Mario Theissen to Autosport.

The German manufacturer is expected to find drivers outside their current programmes.

“We are talking to our current drivers, but there is no rush. We will first focus on our current drivers, and then see if there are open cockpits,” said Theissen.

BMW expects their new DTM car to hit the tracks for the first time in May 2011.

“On the car side, the regulations are fixed now so the design phase is underway and it looks to me like we can expect a rollout in May. With car design, the preparations are on schedule,” said Theissen.
