Spengler fights back – claims pole position
Bruno Spengler fought back from a difficult practice to claim pole position at Hockenheim. The Canadian had to endure a terrible morning practice not managing a single flying lap but fought back in qualifying.
He claimed pole position for the season opener at Hockenheim and thus stopping Audis dominance so far.
After Audi having dominated the two practice rounds Mercedes looked to be stronger in qualifying with Ralf Schumacher ending up third.
Between the two Mercedes driver Swede Mattias Ekström had a strong run. Despite being injured during pre-season and missing valuable testing time the two-time champion managed to claim second place for tomorrows race.
The first two rows are shared between Audi and Mercedes with Timo Scheider lining up alongside Ralf Schumacher in the second row. Timo Scheider made a mistake at the Spitzkehre hairpin losing valuable time.
The third row is shared between Mike Rockenfeller and Martin Tomczyk, the latter having been strong all weekend so far after being demoted to an older-spec Audi.
A dissapointment however was Jamie Green in his return to the newest-spec Mercedes. The Brit only managed 14th place but for his country man Gary Paffett the qualifing was even worse. The former DTM-champion and McLaren test-driver lines up last after after he spun out on his lap.
DTM resumes the action with warm-up at 9:30 CET tomorrow followed by the race at 14:03 CET.
