Radio problems cost Bruno Spengler

Bruno Spengler looked set for a second straight victory of the season at Zandvoort. But radio problems with the pits made the Canadian lose first place to Mike Rockenfeller.
“Bruno’s car was having radio problems throughout the race, so he didn’t hear the call from the team in time for his first pit stop. If he’d stopped one lap earlier, he would have kept the lead, though we might have lost this on the second stop anyway,” said Norbert Haug, Head of Mercedes Motorsport.

Spengler started from pole position and kept the lead for the first part of the race.

“The race started well. I got off the line all right and my pace in the first stint was fast enough. I managed to shake Mike Rockenfeller off, but then at the first pit stop, there was a bit of confusion on the radio about whether I should come in or not, and that’s when Mike got past me,” said Spengler.

The Canadian had to defend second towards the end of the race as Martin Tomczyk closed in. Spengler managed to stay ahead to score eight points for second and extends his lead to eight points over Rockenfeller and Tomczyk who are on equal points in second.

“That’s motor racing. Even so, second is still a good result,” said Spengler.
