Tomczyk wins ahead of Schumacher in Austria
Martin Tomczyk claimed his first DTM victory since 2009 at Red Bull Ring in Austria today, moving him to just three points from championship leader Bruno Spengler. Ralf Schumacher finished a strong second, his best ever DTM result and his second podium visit of 2011.
Schumacher started third, managed to get past Oliver Jarvis during the pit stops and closed in on Tomczyk towards the end of the race. The Mercedes driver was close, but not close enough to pass and crossed the line just 0.462 seconds behind Tomczyk.
Jarvis claimed the final podium position but had to defend from a storming Bruno Spengler. The Canadian selected a different pit stop strategy compared to the others and stayed out until lap 22 for his first pit stop.
Thanks to the strategy and the strong pace, Spengler crossed the line as fourth, just 0.250 seconds behind Jarvis.
Mike Rockenfeller claimed fifth ahead of Jamie Green and Timo Scheider. Gary Paffet, David Coulthard and Renger van der Zande rounded off top ten.
Maro Engel and Edoardo Mortara clashed at the start of the race in the first corner, resulting in a spin for Mortara and a drive through penalty for Engel.
Mattias Ekström had an even worse day as the Swede had to retire after the first pitstop as the pit crew failed to fasten his front right tyre.
