Close title fight continues at Nürburgring
The Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters heads to Nürburgring this weekend for the 45th time since the formation of the championship in 1984. Mercedes driver and championship leader Bruno Spengler is the hunted driver – only three points ahead of Audi man Martin Tomczyk in second.
“The Nürburgring definitely is one of my favourite circuits. After all, I have won the Nürburgring round, last year. Nonetheless, I have to admit that the weather conditions can be a kind of difficult, there, but that’s something you can accustom to. But no matter if under blue skies or in torrential rain – I want to score the maximum points at all costs,” said Spengler.
Tomczyk is hoping to regain the lead of the championship with the help of Nürburgring being the home race of his team Phoenix.
“The Nürburgring will be a really great event. Not only because my new team is at home here. I like the Nürburgring very much too. In the past few years I always really enjoyed driving there. So I’m really looking forward to the race and hope to be able to recapture the lead of the standings there,” said Tomczyk.
Timo Scheider is closest to the top duo in the championship in third. But the double DTM champion is chased by Mercedes man Jamie Green, just three points behind.
“I had a good race at the Nürburgring last year, despite starting third and finishing fifth. I’ve been on the podium once at the Nürburgring in my DTM career so far. That was back in 2008, so I would dearly love to be up there again this season,” said Green.
Five race weekends remain of the 2011 DTM season with Brands Hatch GP next up after Nürburgring.
