Ekström wins as Tomczyk is DTM champion 2011

Mattias Ekström won his second straight race in style at Valencia in Spain today. But all eyes were on Martin Tomczyk who made his way from 11th on the grid to third in the race – securing enough points to claim the Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters 2011 title.

Ekström took the start and lead the race all the way to the finish, crossing the line over 15 seconds ahead of his closest competitor.

Filipe Albuquerque claimed his best ever DTM finish in second and had a lonely race ahead of Tomczyk.

Tomczyk made his way up through the field and was sixth early on in the race. With a very strong second part of the race.

With Spengler “only” managing to finish seventh, Tomczyk scored enough points to claim the title and become the first ever driver to become champion in an older specification car.

Timo Scheider was first man outside the podium in fourth position and lost a lot of time in the final pitstop after stalling the engine.

Miguel Molina claimed fifth ahead of his home crowd with Oliver Jarvis ahead of Spengler in sixth.

Gary Paffett, Mike Rockenfeller and Jamie Green rounded off the top ten.

David Coulthard [6th] and Renger van der Zande [5th] were not classified in the results as both of them failed the post-qualifying checks yesterday.
