Spengler quickest in second free practice

Bruno Spengler clocked the fastest laptime in the second Free Practice session at Oschersleben. The BMW driver had navigated the midfield for most of the session but was able to improve dramatically in his last run. Spengler was one tenth quicker than title rival Gary Paffett, who had been on top for most of the session.

Ralf Schumacher took third for Mercedes, confirming the strong form of the Mercedes C Class today. The former Grand Prix driver was followed by best Audi driver Filipe Albuquerque. Title contender Jamie Green was fifth, almost half a second off the pace, and was followed closely by fellow Mercedes driver Christian Vietoris.

The three Audis of Mike Rockenfeller, Edoardo Mortara and Adrien Tambay were split by Dirk Werner, who had clocked the fastest laptime yesterday and classified ninth, half a second slower than fellow BMW driver Bruno Spengler.

Augusto Farfus, who had looked strong yesterday, had a big moment just before the last corner, putting all four wheels out on the grass at high speed, but was able to recover and continue without any major damages to his M3. The Brazilian was classified thirteenth, seven tenths off the pace.

Martin Tomczyk made a mistake early on and broke his front right suspension on the high kerb at the chicane, which forced him out of the session. The defending champion, who has a five-spot grid penalty to his name due to the accident in Zandvoort with Paffett, was therefore classified last with only three laps completed in the second part of the session.

A few minor incidents happened under braking at the first corner, with several drivers locking their wheels and Dirk Werner spinning in the process. Qualifying is scheduled for 13.40 CET.
