Marco Wittmann and BMW on top in Hockenheim test day one
Marco Wittmann and BMW topped the first day of the final pre-season test of the year at Hockenheim. The Team MTEK driver lapped the circuit in 1:33.023 with the new softer option tyres from Hankook, driving team mate Timo Glock’s car for the day, just over four tenths faster than manufacturer colleague Martin Tomczyk.
Gary Paffett was best of the Mercedes drivers in third position, eight tenths from Wittmann, ahead of Dirk Werner and Augusto Farfus Jr.
Daniel Juncadella was sixth fastest ahead of the top Audi driver in the form of Mike Rockenfeller for Team Phoenix, a full 1.8 seconds from the top time.
The morning session was held in dry conditions while the afternoon session was held in wet conditions, meaning that the times were not improved.
“Of course, being on top at the end of a test day is always nice. But today’s times shouldn’t be overestimated. In the morning, we didn’t have particularly much time in the dry, but we were able to make good use of it. In the afternoon, it was raining again, but we were doing well in these conditions, too. Then, I lost some time, because we had to work on the car. Nevertheless, we can be happy with the first day,” said Wittmann.
The DTM test at Hockenheim continues until Friday.
