Mattias Ekström unsure on place in Audi hierarchy
Mattias Ekström has admitted he is unsure where the Abt Sportsline outfit stands in the hierarchy of Audi’s teams in 2013.
The Swede has been part of the Kempten based outfit since his DTM debut in 2001, and despite being crowned DTM champion with them in 2004 and 2007, he has had a difficult last few seasons and endured a winless year in 2012.
The opening races of this season have once again seen the Red Bull branded squad struggle and Ekström has just six points to his name; all of which were scored yesterday at Brands Hatch.
Team-mate Jamie Green has fared even worse since switching to Audi from Mercedes for 2013, and has yet to open his points account.
“It’s a good question whether Abt Sportsline is the best Audi team,” Ekström told TouringCarTimes after the race. “If you look at yesterday’s race, we definitely weren’t.”
“As you can see, [Mike] Rockenfeller can do it, so it’s up to us to find the sweet-spot to do it as well.
“All I can say is, is that [team] Phoenix is doing a good job.”
