Marco Wittmann hails ‘awesome’ front row grid slot

BMW’s rookie Marco Wittmann has described his second position grid slot alongside stablemate Bruno Spengler as ‘awesome.’

The MTEK team driver was promoted from a test driver role for 2013, and has impressed with his strong start to the season.

The 24-year old took ninth on his debut at Hockenheim, and raced to fourth after setting the pace in practice at Brands Hatch two weeks ago.

At Spielberg, Wittmann once again showed his speed after finishing fourth in yesterday morning’s practice session. He then traded fastest times with stablemate Bruno Spengler throughout all four qualifying rounds and was a contender for pole position.

Despite finishing second best to his more experienced stablemate, Wittmann was nonetheless delighted with his performance.

“To start the race from the front row after only the third qualifying of my DTM career is just awesome.

“I am overjoyed and particularly pleased for the MTEK team who did a great job, [but] that was a fantastic qualifying for BMW in general.

“My race pace was very good in Hockenheim and at Brands Hatch, [so] we are well prepared for tomorrow’s race.”
