Nico Müller in running for 2014 Audi drive

Formula Renault 3.5 racer, Nico Müller, is in contention for a 2014 Audi drive, according to Autosport.

The 21-year-old Swiss driver tested for the Ingolstadt manufacturer alongside Audi endurance driver, Lucas di Grassi and its DTM regulars, Mike Rockenfeller and Mattias Ekström at the Red Bull Ring last month.

Despite revealing that no decision had been taken on its 2014 driver line-up, Audi’s head of DTM, Dieter Gass, said Muller’s strong performance in the test has been cause for the manufacturer to closely monitor his progress.

“He tested an old-style A4 at Monteblanco previously,” said Gass. “And was very close to getting the DTM seat that Adrien Tambay was eventually given.”

Gass also hinted that Müller may also be in contention to form part of Audi’s 2014 World Endurance Championship driver line-up.

“He is, let’s say, in contention for an Audi drive next year, although I can’t say for which progamme. We may well give him an LMP test soon as well.”

Müller won the FR3.5 races at Monaco and the Hungaroring in 2013, and currently lies fifth in the series’ standings.

“To get a DTM test was great. When a manufacturer gives you an opportunity it show that I haven’t got everything wrong so far in my career.

“The test was nice, it was a shame there wasn’t more dry running but I seemed to compare quite well to the other guys.

“We all have to same dream of Formula 1 so you don’t always want to look away from single seaters, but now I have seen DTM up close I understand that it could be a very good place to go racing.

“I can wait until after the season to think about what comes next. And of course it’s not only my decision.”
