Christian Vietoris: “We could have won at least two races”

Mercedes’ Christian Vietoris feels he was able to win at least two races this 2013 season.

Vietoris, who is in his second year with the HWA team, finished the season as the best placed of the Mercedes drivers after ending the year fourth in the drivers’ standings.

Despite finishing as the highest ranking Mercedes driver, Vietoris did not manage to take a victory in 2013 unlike team-mates Gary Paffett and Robert Wickens.

His highest place finishes this season were four third place finishes, with a pole-position at the Lausitzring.

Whilst he expressed disappointment at not managing to win a race in 2013, Vietoris is pleased with meeting his 2013 target of finishing in the top-five in the championship.

“In the end I think we could have won at least two races this season,” Vietoris told TouringCarTimes.  “Probably even three or four really, because the speed was there.

“That’s why it’s a little disappointing that we weren’t able to get a win, but at the end of day, the championship ranking shows the real performance and being the best ranked Mercedes driver in fourth shows that it wasn’t that bad.

“For myself, I’m pleased. The season was really good, so I’m content with my performance and with the young team around me.”

Vietoris also said he will use his impressive 2013 as a springboard for an even stronger 2014 DTM campaign.

“We got used to operating at another level, and I think that’s a great basis for next season.

“Now it’s important to work hard during the winter break to come back with a strong car next year which is competitive over the entire season.

“This makes it possible for me to set even higher goals for 2014.”
