Mercedes confirms seven car entry for 2014 DTM season

Mercedes will field seven cars in the 2014 DTM season, today confirming that the four drivers which have already been confirmed, Gary Paffett, Paul Di Resta , Daniel Juncadella and Vitaly Petrov, will be joined by Pascal Wehrlein, Christian Vietoris and Robert Wickens this season, all three being retained by the manufacturer.

Mercedes effectively expands by one car, after fielding just six last season, but with two new additions with the return of Paul Di Resta, and with Vitaly Petrov joining the squad, Spaniard Roberto Merhi has lost his race seat and will instead take up a test driving role for Mercedes.

“Our DTM squad for the 2014 season is a good mix of successful DTM winners such as Gary and Paul, plus aspiring DTM drivers like our Mercedes juniors,” said Head of Mercedes Benz Motorsport Toto Wolff.

“We clearly did not quite live up to our expectations last season, which is why we intend to do much better in the new season. With two DTM champions, two ex-Formula 1 drivers and a bevy of young, well-proven DTM drivers, we will achieve even more race wins this year and aim ultimately to have a good crack at the title.”

Mercedes will again field the AMG C-Coupé model this season against the eight RS 5s of Audi and the eight M4s of BMW, bringing the field up to a recent high of 23 cars. The split of which drivers will compete with the HWA team and which will drive for Mücke Motorsport has not been revealed.

The 2014 DTM season starts on May 4th at Hockenheim.
