Game, set and match for Audi at the Lausitzring

Audi Sport celebrated one of its most successful weekends in the Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters last weekend at the Lausitzring, second round of the 2015 season. The manufacturer took a dominant victory on Sunday, occupying the top five positions of the classification, after another superb drive by Jamie Green.

The Briton told Touring Car Times back in Hockenheim that achieving his first win for Audi had allowed him to turn a corner in terms of establishing himself as a top driver for the Ingolstadt manufacturer. And he didn’t disappoint the expectations in Lausitzring, finishing the weekend with two victories and a pole position, allowing him to distance himself as the championship leader.

Green was exultant after one of his best racing weekends ever: “A fantastic weekend, arguably the best one in my career. Two victories, a commanding best time in qualifying with a half-second advantage, plus the fastest lap in both races, you can’t hardly achieve more than that. I was fast at the Lausitzring before, but this year I’ve upped the ante. It was a mega job by everyone involved. The Audi RS 5 DTM seems to be tailor-made for me this year. Now I’m looking forward to travelling to the Norisring as the leader of the standings. It’s one of my favourite tracks.”

Mattias Ekström had also a good weekend, with two podium finishes. The Swede highlighted the team effort pulled by everyone at Audi: “Even though I obviously would have preferred winning myself, I’m happy about our strong performance as a team.”

Team Abt Sportsline’s Miguel Molina was third on Sunday after a good performance. The Spaniard was fourth on Saturday, after having led 75% of the race. Molina has grown in confidence and hopes to be able to take the next step soon: “This has been the first weekend that I’ve really been in contention at the Lausitzring. Pole on Saturday and a podium on Sunday, the only thing that was missing was a victory. I’m happy with my performance. Jamie and Mattias are in a class of their own, but catching up with them is my next goal.”

Head of DTM for Audi Dieter Gass was very happy after a ‘perfect weekend’ and hopes to continue their strong performance at the Norisring: “You don’t get to see a one-two-three-four win in the DTM very often. That we even had five of our cars at the front on Sunday crowns a perfect DTM weekend for Audi, particularly on a track we were frequently having some difficulties with in the past. This shows how strong the Audi RS 5 DTM is. Following his victory at Hockenheim, Jamie Green seems to have finally made his breakthrough. After this weekend, we really have a reason to celebrate, but we also know how quickly the tables can turn again in the DTM. Our home round at the Norisring in four weeks from now will literally be a heavy challenge because we’ll have to add even more weight to our cars.”

Audi Sport leads the manufacturers’ standings with 265 points, 174 ahead of Mercedes and 217 over BMW. Jamie Green leads the drivers’ table with 75 points, as ‘Mr. Norisring’ heads to his favourite track, next round of the DTM from the 26th to the 28th of June.
