BMW back in contention after perfect day at Oschersleben

BMW Motorsport made the most of their advantage today to take both pole position and race victory at the Motorsport Arena Oschersleben, host of the seventh round of the Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters season. With seven cars in the top 10, the Bavarian manufacturer also made a significant step forward in the championship.

The M4 DTMs have dominated all sessions at the Motorsport Arena so far. Today, Team MTEK driver Timo Glock scored his first ever DTM pole position, which he converted in his second DTM career win. Glock didn’t hide his happiness at the result, a ray of light in an otherwise very complicated season: “This victory feels fantastic. It was hugely enjoyable to drive the car today. However, I had to push in the race. I wanted to get out of the DRS window as soon as possible, to avoid the threat posed by my team-mate Bruno Spengler. I fought like a lion all race and was rewarded with my second DTM win. I am pleased for my team that our work has finally paid off and we even managed a one-two. The guys deserved that.”

Bruno Spengler was back to his happy self after a strong race, finishing in second position, a result that puts him into the fight for the championship. The Canadian’s result, together with the woes suffered by Pascal Wehrlein and Mattias Ekström, means that Spengler is now tied in fourth position of the Drivers’ table, just 27 points behind the leader: “You don’t get to celebrate a one-two every day. This is a great result for my team. Congratulations to Timo Glock on his second DTM win. The whole performance from BMW was fantastic today. Everything went perfectly for us. I scored a lot of points and am now back in the title race in the Drivers’ Championship. We must still keep our feet on the ground but we have every reason to celebrate today.”

António Félix Da Costa visited the last step of the podium to be third this season. The Portuguese driver promised to deliver more tomorrow: “I was able to get the maximum out of our package again today. It feels great to be back on the podium. Congratulations to everyone at BMW Motorsport on this fantastic result. We will do our best to repeat today’s performance tomorrow.”

Augusto Farfus was fourth, with Marco Wittmann in sixth position, followed by Tom Blomqvist and Martin Tomczyk. Maxime Martin was 11th and the only BMW out of the points.

The result allowed the Bavarian squad to outscore their rivals by an ample margin. As a result, BMW has now jumped to second position in the Manufacturers’ standings, only nine points behind Audi Sport.

Jens Marquardt, BMW Motorsport Director, had many reasons to smile, but chose to remain focused for the action to come tomorrow: “This is a fantastic result for us. We were very strong when we tested here, and were able to underline that strength today. Timo Glock produced a great, flawless race to claim his second victory in the DTM. He was unbeatable today. Bruno Spengler, António Félix da Costa and Augusto Farfus also performed strongly to finish in second to fourth places. We don’t have much time to celebrate today. We are back in business tomorrow and hope to achieve a similar result.”

The DTM field will be back on track tomorrow at 9:00 CEST (GMT + 2) for the morning warm up session.
