Pascal Wehrlein says title challengers are now down to just Mortara & Ekström

Following a disastrous race for BMW Team MTEK’s Bruno Spengler and Audi Sport Team Rosberg’s Jamie Green at the Nürburgring, with both drivers failing to score after incidents in today’s sprint race, championship leader Pascal Wehrlein now believes he has to watch out for just the two Abt Audis of Edoardo Mortara and Mattias Ekström in the battle for this year’s title.

The Mercedes AMG F1 reserve driver is on the cusp of his first DTM title, now with a lead of 27 points over Mortara after finishing third in today’s race, although there are still 75 points still available from the final three races.

“I think now it’s Edoardo, Mattias and me which are in the best position in the championship,” said Wehrlein to TouringCarTimes. “Both are very strong, sometimes one is struggling like Mattias was today, and hopefully I’m more consistent and keep scoring in every race, but both are very good and are in a good position.

“Today I was in the lead and if I hadn’t left the door so wide for Martin I could have won the race and my championship lead would be even bigger.”
