Edoardo Mortara shines again for Audi Sport

Edoardo Mortara confirmed today his good state of form, scoring a new podium finish at the Red Bull Ring, host of the second round of the 2016 Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters season.

The Italian from Team Abt Sportsline was the fastest man for the four-ring manufacturer on the track, qualifying in fourth place on the grid and finishing the race in third place.

The race wasn’t easy for Mortara, who was under attack from BMW’s Timo Glock from the onset, consuming all his 42 DRS allowed activations by mid-race, in a bid to overtake the cars in front. Despite the limitations, Mortara prevailed over Glock to be the last man on the podium.

Mortara was ecstatic with a new podium finish: “That was the best we could do today from fourth on the grid. My car was great, but the two BMWs in front of me were also very quick. I had hoped that their tyres would drop off more at the end. Unfortunately, this wasn’t the case. Even so, third place is a great result.”

Audi struggled in the race, with several drivers involved in various incidents. Only Adrien Tambay in eighth and Nico Müller in tenth managed to get in the points for the Ingolstadt manufacturer. The Swiss driver from Team Abt remains the only Audi driver to have scored points in all races held so far this season.

Dieter Gass, head of Audi Sport in the DTM, was praiseful to his men, but hit out at the incidents affecting his drivers: “Congratulations to Edo, who made a good start and drove a clean race. Nico and Adrien also impressed today. It was extremely irritating that Mattias was attacked very harshly again. He had the fastest car in the field today. To be pushed into a spin at the first corner and then for another driver to drive zig-zag against all the regulations just before the end of the race is not acceptable.”

On track action for the DTM resumes tomorrow morning for the third free practice session.
