Marco Wittmann positive ahead of Nürbugring weekend

The DTM heads for its seventh round of the 2016 season at the Nürburgring this weekend. BMW Motorsport and Marco Wittmann sail with favourable winds to the Eifel, where they expect to stay ahead in the battle for the championship.

The Bavarian manufacturer leads all three championship tables leading to the seventh round of the season, start of the final leg of the 2016 campaign. Team RMG, on top of the Teams’ classification, faces its home event feeling confident after a successful record at the Nürburgring. “The whole team, and the drivers are extra motivated for our home race. In the past we have been able to celebrate some great successes at the Nürburgring, which were very emotional for us. We will do everything we can to be the best at the Ring this year too” said Stefan Reinhold, Team Principal at BMW Team RMG.

Marco Wittmann leads the Drivers’ standings with 130 points, 12 ahead of Mercedes AMG’s Robert Wickens. The 2014 champion enjoyed great success at the Eifel two years ago, and is full of confidence for the weekend: “The Nürburgring is always worth a visit and that is true for drivers too. It is like a second home race for me. We have had very good results here up to now. Especially after winning in Moscow, that is why I have a positive feeling about the race weekend at the Nürburgring.”

Martin Tomczyk sports the ‘Performance Parts’ livery on his M4 DTM, which will have a special tweak this weekend to celebrate BMW’s 100th anniversary. The 2011 champion hopes for a good result: “The track is one of my favourite circuits, and I have reached the podium there a few times. However the weekend goes: it will be a great weekend for BMW, as the brand is closely linked to the Nürburgring, so I hope the fans like the anniversary design.”

BMW Motorsport leads the Manufacturers’ table after a strong show in Sunday’s race in Moscow two weeks ago. The Bavarian manufacturer has 436 points in its account, 46 over Audi Sport and 50 ahead of Mercedes AMG. The eight BMW M4 DTMs will start the weekend as the lightest cars on track, with a base weight or 1,115 kg.

BMW Motorsport Director Jens Marquardt is also looking forward to a special weekend for the manufacturer: “BMW and the DTM share a long and successful history at this racetrack. We are now leading all three DTM championships as we arrive at the Nürburgring, but we know that it will not be easy for us there. Everything is so tight that every point counts in the last third of the season. I am very curious to see the special design the BMW M Performance Parts M4 DTM will be sporting this weekend to celebrate the 100th birthday of the BMW Group.”

On track action for the DTM kicks off at 17:00 on Friday afternoon for the first free practice session.
