‘Mega Marco’ has a perfect day in Nürburgring

Marco Wittmann scored an important win today at the Nürburgring, seventh round of the DTM season. The German driver from BMW Team RMG now has an important advantage in the championship.

First assault for the 2014 champion was getting pole position this afternoon. Wittmann was second in the qualifying session, but inherited the pole due to Lucas Auer’s grid penalty. “Getting the pole was important today for us, even if it was after Auer’s problem. We needed to be clear about our objectives” said Wittmann to TouringCarTimes.

The race was a lights-to-flag win for the German driver: “For the race, I just focussed on not making mistakes. I had a good start and my first objective was getting out of the DRS window to protect myself. It was important to bring it home and score the points.”

The Nürburgring represents a home race for BMW Team RMG, the formation looking after Wittmann’s M4 DTM: “I’m very happy to get this result for myself and for BMW but, more importantly, for my team, this is their home event and they have worked very hard. They truly deserve it.”

Wittmann has now 155 points in the championship, 35 ahead of his nearest competitor, Mercedes AMG’s Robert Wickens.

Jens Marquardt, BMW Motorsport Director, was full of praise for his man: “We were once again treated to ‘Mega Marco’ today. He claimed the home win for BMW Team RMG in dominant fashion, thanks to a top-class performance.”

The DTM goes back to action tomorrow at 10:40 for the third free practice session of the weekend.
