Edoardo Mortara pleased to take ‘perfect car’ to victory

Audi Sport driver Edoardo Mortara scored his third victory of the year today at the Nürburgring, in an important move to keep him in the frame in the fight for the title. The Italian has now positioned himself as the main driver for the Ingolstadt manufacturer in the drivers’ championship table.

Mortara started the race from sixth position on the grid, climbing up to fourth at the start. The Italian delayed his compulsory pit stop until the end of the tyre change window, gaining ground and returning to the track with fresh tyres for a final charge for the victory.

“It was a perfect Sunday race” Mortara told TouringCarTimes. “Everything fell into place today to get the victory.”

The Italian had to recover from not his best qualifying: “To be honest, I made a couple of mistakes in the qualifying session. The key was having a good start. The first part of the race was quiet, trying to save DRS and watching the tyres. I had to wait for the right moment to come into the pits.”

“I had a good move on Lucas and then was able to put some ground in the middle. My car was perfect all weekend, even though we couldn’t show it yesterday” concluded Mortara.

The Italian is now second in the standings with 137 points, 33 adrift from leader Marco Wittmann. The pair are now the main contenders for the title.

Dieter Gass, Head of DTM at Audi Sport, said: “We had a strong comeback after yesterday’s race. We started further behind, but worked better on the strategy. I’m very pleased to have won this race.”
