Marco Wittmann finishes third to complete best weekend of the season

BMW Motorsport driver Marco Wittmann was third in today’s DTM race at the Nürburgring, scoring the 250th podium for the Bavarian manufacturer in the series. The German from Team RMG leaves the Eifel track with a strong lead in the championship.

Wittmann qualified in second place on the grid. At the start, the BMW driver wasn’t able to overtake Mercedes’ Lucas Auer to take the lead. Wittmann was faster than the Austrian, but was unable to get through.

“We made it onto the podium again, I’m very happy for my team and for BMW. We tried to get to the lead, but Lucas was very strong” Wittmann told TouringCarTimes.

In the closing stages of the race, the standings leader suffered the attacks from recovering Mattias Ekström, who was close to taking third place. Wittmann said: “It was hard fought with Ekström, we even touched at the chicane, but I managed to stay ahead in the end.”

Today’s result, together with yesterday’s victory, marks Wittmann’s best weekend of the season so far. The Team RMG driver said: “I was trying to get a better result, especially for my team, who are racing at home this weekend. But two podiums in a weekend is very good, I have now a big lead in the championship and we are in a strong position for the final part of the season.”

Marco Wittmann leaves Nürburgring with 170 points to his account, 33 over Audi’s Edoardo Mortara. The pair are the only two drivers to have won three times this season.
